Changing Concepts of Ultrasonics - Ms. Cheri Wu, RDH

Course Outline
Traditionally held theories related to the use of power scalers were confined primarily to clients with heavy supragingival deposits. However, this theory has changed. Due to a paradigm shift in the philosophy of periodontal therapy, the improvement of ultrasonic insert design, and the advancements in ultrasonic technology, prominent thought leaders and clinicians are suggesting that these devices become the primary instrument for periodontal debridement.
Supported by evidenced-based research, this course will provide a comparison of ultrasonic technologies and examine the effectiveness, safety and applications of ultrasonic scaling techniques.
With today’s expanding technologies and busy lifestyle, this information will enable the dental professional to work ‘smarter and not harder’. Attention will be given to medical and dental considerations, infection control, and insert evaluation and sequencing based on client assessment. As pain management is an essential component of periodontal therapy procedures, anesthetic options will be discussed briefly and will include information on Oraqix, a new, non-injectable anesthetic for periodontal debridement.
